Immigration New Zealand's changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) resident visa and the Work to Residence (WTR) visa took effect on 24 August 2026, with final details published in June 2026. If you are planning for residence, here are the key points to check.

Two new pathways

  • Skilled Work Experience pathway: for people with significant skilled work experience in New Zealand.
  • Trades and Technician pathway: for eligible trades and technician occupations.

Work experience

Applicants under these two pathways must show directly relevant work experience supported by independently verifiable evidence. Self-employment cannot count towards directly relevant work experience under these pathways. Job offers must be “available and ongoing” and there must be a genuine need for the role to be based in New Zealand.

Pay thresholds

Most SMC applicants need to meet one wage threshold, generally the one in effect when they began accruing skilled work experience, rather than the threshold at the time of invitation. Where work starts within five months of the work visa being granted, the threshold at the grant date applies. WTR applicants use the wage rate for their occupation at the time their work visa was granted, provided they begin earning at least that rate within five months and keep earning at least that rate.

Work to Residence timing

WTR applicants must complete 24 months of work in New Zealand within the 30 months before applying for residence.

Qualifications

  • The Trades and Technician pathway requires a relevant qualification at Level 4 or higher on the NZ Qualifications and Credentials Framework. New Zealand qualifications generally need at least 120 credits; overseas qualifications need an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) rating them at Level 4 or higher.
  • For Level 8 or 9 points, applicants generally must also hold a supporting bachelor's degree or equivalent, with evidence of both.
  • Bachelor's degree points for qualifications on the list exempt from assessment increased from three to four.

Other updates

Occupation lists were updated, some English test results remain valid for longer, and there is a registration-based option for accountants.

What to do next

  1. Check which pathway fits your occupation and work history.
  2. Gather payslips, contracts and employer references now. Verifiable evidence is critical.
  3. Confirm your qualification level and whether an IQA is needed.
  4. Seek advice before your visa expires or you change employers.

Immigration rules change frequently. We can assess your options and prepare a well-evidenced application.
